About SanDiegoBurritos.com

If you grew up in San Diego County, you know the feeling. The rolled tacos from Roberto's. The California burrito at 2am. The carne asada fries that no one outside of SD has ever quite figured out.

And then you moved. And you've been searching ever since.

Our Mission

SanDiegoBurritos.com is a crowd-sourced guide for anyone who loves San Diego-style food. Whether you grew up here, lived here, visited once and never forgot, or just fell in love with the flavor โ€” this site is for you. When you find a place in Denver or Austin or Nashville that actually gets it right โ€” the carne asada, the rolled tacos, the fresh tortillas โ€” you share it here so the next homesick San Diegan can find it too.

We believe great Mexican food connects people to home. That's the whole idea: a map of San Diego flavor, scattered across the country, drawn by the people who know it best.

What Makes San Diego-Style Different

San Diego's taco shop culture is its own thing โ€” shaped by the border, by decades of neighborhood shops, and by a few originals that set the template. A few hallmarks we look for:

  • The California burrito. Carne asada, french fries, cheese, and guacamole or pico โ€” all wrapped in a flour tortilla. Invented in San Diego, still done best here.
  • Carne asada fries. A pile of fries under marinated, grilled steak, cheese, guac, and sour cream. Simple, and almost impossible to find done right outside SD.
  • Rolled tacos. Crispy, rolled, and buried in shredded cheese and guacamole sauce โ€” not to be confused with taquitos or flautas anywhere else.
  • Fresh flour tortillas. Soft, made-in-house, never from a bag. It's the detail that separates the real ones from the imitators.
  • Carne asada done right. Properly marinated, grilled with a char, chopped fine. The backbone of nearly everything on the menu.

How the Site Works

Everything on SanDiegoBurritos.com is contributed by the community. Here's the flow:

  • Someone finds a spot. You're in a new city and you bite into a California burrito that actually tastes like home.
  • They submit it. A few photos, the restaurant details, and one key question: what about this place captures that San Diego flavor?
  • We review it. Every submission is checked before it goes live โ€” we keep the directory accurate, on-topic, and positive.
  • The community reacts. Other visitors mark spots as "Just Like SD" or "Kind of Like SD," so the best finds rise to the top.

What This Site Is Not

This isn't a review site. We don't rank restaurants by stars and we don't publish negative reviews. We highlight what makes a place great, and specifically what makes it feel like a San Diego taco shop. If a spot isn't a fit, it simply isn't listed โ€” no takedowns, no drama.

Independent restaurants and San Diego original chains only. No national chains. Just hidden gems, submitted by people who know what good tastes like.
